Today the Hollis 2nd graders were going places! The book Going Places, by Peter and Paul Reynolds, is one of the selections from this year's Chickadee Book Award List. In this creative story, two classmates (along with all the other kids in their class) are preparing for the Going Places contest. Equipped with a go-kart making kit, each student builds an identical go-kart. That is, everyone except Maya and Rafael, who learn that with teamwork and imagination, they can build something unique but still go places!
After reading and discussing this book, our 2nd graders had the chance to be vehicle designers. Each student was given their own kit with materials to be used to create their own vehicle.
With the materials in their kits, as well as scissors and glue sticks, the 2nd graders created many unique vehicles from their imaginations! Here are some of their awesome creations:

Wednesday brought another author Skype to the Hollis Elementary library! We were originally scheduled for two, unfortunately a power outage caused one to be rescheduled! Luckily, power came back just in time for Mrs. Pinkham's class to Skype with author Jennifer Swanson!
Jennifer Swanson is the author of several nonfiction books, including Brain Games. During the Skype, she did a few brain games with the class from her book, plus showed us some of her other nonfiction books. Skyping with an author of nonfiction science books created quite a bit of enthusiasm for science for most of the class, once the Skype was over several students rushed to the science section of the library!
With the birthday of Dr. Seuss tomorrow, Read Across America week is underway! Yesterday and today, several classes at Hollis celebrated the occasion with Skypes!
Our first Skype this week was with author Stacy McAnulty. Among the books she has written is the Dino Files series, which Mrs. Dunton's class and I read a bit of in preparation for the Skype session! In addition to talking about her books and reading a little to us, she shared some great facts about dinosaurs!
Today we had two Skypes! Our author Skype today was with Lee Wardlaw, author of many books including Won Ton, a Cat Tale told in Haiku. Mrs. Daigle's 1st grade learned about Ms. Wardlaw and her books and heard her read another of her books, Red, White and Boom!
Our other Skype today was a collaborative reading Skype! Two first grade classes at Hollis, Mrs. Hall's class and Mrs. Bshara's class, read a Piggie and Elephant book with the first grades at H.B. Emery! The Hollis first grades were Piggie, while the HBE first grades read the part of Gerald (the elephant). All four classes did a great job reading and it was so wonderful to see so many familiar faces from H.B. Emery!
