Our Hollis 3rd graders have been busy researchers! After reading three nonfiction books from this year's Chickadee Book Award list - Elizabeth, Queen of the Seas, A Boy and a Jaguar, and Ivan: The Remarkable True Story of the Shopping Mall Gorilla - our 3rd grade learners worked in small groups to learn more about elephant seals, jaguars, and gorillas. After several weeks of finding facts using a variety of print and web-based resources, the groups created video presentations using Adobe Voice to share what they learned! They did a great job working in their groups to find facts and create their presentations! Below are some of their completed videos.
The month of April has been very busy at the libraries, especially with author Skypes! Over these past couple weeks, several Hollis classes had the opportunity to Skype with authors. I love having my students Skype with authors. It brings out such an amazing enthusiasm for reading and writing in them!
Last week, Mrs. Brooks' 4th grade Skyped with author Nancy Castaldo. Ms. Castaldo is the author of several nonfiction books including Sniffer Dogs.
Mrs. Johnson's kindergartners also got to Skype with an author last week! During their library time, they met Lori Degman, author of several fun picture books. During her Skype, Ms. Degman read her book Cockle-a-Doodle Oops!
Earlier this week, Mrs. Bshara's 1st graders Skyped with author Jane Kohuth. Ms. Kohuth's picture books include Duck Sock Hop, which she read with the class during her Skype.
After April break, we will be having several more author Skypes! My hope is that, by the end of the school year, all of my classes will have had the opportunity to Skype with at least one author!
