National Park Mystery Skype!

12/26/2016

We've done a lot of Mystery Skypes in the libraries, but last week Mrs. Evans' 5th grade had one unlike any we've ever done before: a Mystery Skype with a National Park Ranger!  Similar to previous Mystery Skypes, the class had to guess the location of the person we were Skyping with, but this time the location was a National Park and they were Skyping with a ranger rather than another class.  To prepare for this Skype, the class learned a bit about the National Park Service  as well as practiced by playing "guess what National Park I'm thinking of" with a partner.

Mrs. Evans' class correctly guessed that Ranger Matt was in Yellowstone National Park after asking him a series of yes or no questions. Ranger Matt then used the remainder of our Skype to talk with the class about some of the amazing hydrothermal features that Yellowstone National Park has, including geysers and hot springs, as well as the variety of wildlife that live in Yellowstone.   It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn more about a place that I hope many will someday visit!

Celebrating Our Success!

Congratulations to three classes at George E. Jack for earning their first 25 points for awesome library behavior!   At GEJ, I use a whole class point system to encourage respectful, responsible, and safe behavior in the library.   At the end of each library session, the class and I discuss and decide how many points, on a scale of 1  - 5, the class should earn based on their behavior that day.    Recently, three classes- Ms. Bunk's 4th grade, Mrs. Fries' 4th grade, and Ms. Corrow's 4th grade, all reached their first goal of 25 points and earned a reward day.  Ms. Bunk's class and Mrs. Fries' class celebrated with a popcorn party/game day during their library times last week and Ms. Corrow's class will celebrate when they return from break.  Great job to all the GEJ classes for working hard towards reaching their point goals!

On Friday, December 16th, Mrs. Libby's 5th graders Skyped with the author Tom Angleberger!   Best known for the Origami Yoda series, Mr. Angleberger is the author of many other entertaining books, including the Inspector Flytrap series, which is illustrated by his wife Cece Bell (who Skyped with one our Hollis 5th grades at the end of November).    Mr. Angleberger gave us a very informative, and funny, Skype that concluded with him teaching the students how to make their own Origami Yodas!  We are so appreciative to Mr. Angleberger for taking the time to Skype with us!
